May 2013 Connection

Our guests visiting during coffee break

May Visitors at GrBC

After enjoying our Easter holiday break at the beginning of the month, we had the privilege of welcoming two special guests to our college.

Dr. John Vonder Bruegge is a religion professor from Meg’s alma mater, Northwestern College. He came to stay at the college for a few days in order to scout out the possibility of bringing a group of summer study abroad students with him next year around this time. They would stay on our campus for up to a week, taking advantage of the opportunity to have a genuine cross-cultural experience interacting with our Greek students. Not only will they engage in discussions about cultural differences over a frappe (Greece’s famous iced coffee drink), but they will also tag along with them in their various ministry service involvements. We are very excited for connections like this to be made for the mutual benefit of both our students and Iowa students. This was one of our hopes after we took time to talk with various departments at Northwestern while at home on furlough this past fall.

At the end of John’s visit, our next special guest arrived. Melody Mazuk is an International Librarian who travels around the world to help small theological colleges like ours set up and strengthen their library services. She came specifically to advise us about how to proceed in automating our check out system with barcodes.
She has also been able to give helpful tips to Pav as he continues to work on programming our online database and librarian cataloging systems. We’re very grateful for her professional expertise, and we're excited that she will be returning yet again this September (and hopefully even more times beyond that!) to help with various library projects.

What a privilege to get to know John & Melody better these days, and to see how God works out these great connections for the benefit of our students and the greater Christian community. This summer will bring many more visitors our way, and we’re anticipating many more blessings from those connections.

We also celebrated with our graduates at the end of the month

Yet again, the Lord blessed the college community with great students, and we're reminded to continue to be thankful for the privilege we've been given to work at GrBC and be a part of their lives as God prepares them for the plans He has for them for His glory.

Look for more in our summer newsletter that we'll send in July, taking a quick look back at this past semester and reporting on the progress made on our summer library projects!

  • Pray for our graduates as they move on from GrBC, many trying to find a job and figure out their next steps, while also participating in summer ministry opportunities.
  • Pray for our summer volunteers: that they will feel excited about all that lies ahead for them in Greece; that they will come with an attitude of learning and service; and that we will be a mutual encouragement to one another, growing as disciples of Christ!
  • Pray for Jim Finke and his wife Ruth. They are retiring after a few decades of missionary work with our college and the local church in Greece. May the Lord bless them in their next venture for His glory!

The GrBC staff gathered together this month for a surprise retirement party for Professor Finke and his wife.
This year's graduation book sale earned us over $250 towards purchasing quality books for our library.
