Many reasons to be smiling!

February 2014 Connection

We have many reasons to be smiling!
Excited about 2014

Most of the last two and a half years of our lives have been filled with books and computers, but when we hit our three year mark of working at the college this summer, we'll have a new thing to add to our primary responsibilities list: being a parent. This little one will make his or her debut about six months from now, and we're super excited to meet our first child!

Our journey to parenthood hasn't been the easiest, since in 2013 we had two early miscarriages. It took a little while to fully process the grief, but as we were walking this path, we realized how many other couples have similar painful experiences. Today we can honestly say we've learned a lot through the hurt: First, the truth that this life is so fragile, temporary, and full of challenge and pain for all of us; and second, that thankfully we are not at home in this broken world. We have a confident hope in our Savior who has accomplished and continues a magnificent redeeming work, and the youngest to the oldest of humanity are a part of it.

We also felt like this experience is not often spoken about amongst our family of brothers and sisters in Christ. Please know that we're willing to talk about it, and if you've felt similar pain and have a desire to talk about it, we are open to listening and sharing with you.

We are grateful that this pregnancy seems to be going well so far, but most of all, we are even more in awe and grateful for the miracle of life. It is so completely obvious that God is intricately involved in the most delicate aspects of creating a new person. Praise the Lord for His wonderful works. Each of us is a miracle - not only as we're being formed in our mothers' wombs, but each day we are alive and breathing!

News from the College

We still have a bit of time before the baby arrives, so let's get back to updating you with our current preoccupations.

We recently built a new wall-covering book shelf for one of the two rooms housing our 17,000+ volume library, which means lots of book shifting (quite a bit more work than you might first imagine!). Also, we recently completed an online inventory of the 1,000 books we have available for sale (ideal for our students to build their personal libraries). Finally, after barcoding our entire library last summer and getting our library data linked this fall, we are about to introduce the new barcoding check-out system, effectively bringing our library into the 21st century!

The new library shelves

On the computer side of things, Pavlos, with the help of a tech-savvy student, completed network infrastructure repairs and important upgrades.  In addition, three new computers were added to our library thanks to a church's designated donation. Finally, even though there is still a long ways to go in our goals for distance learning at the college, we just enrolled our first official student taking a pilot online course this semester!

The “tidy” version of some of the new equipment

We praise the Lord for the advancements that have taken place during our thirty months of serving at the Bible College. Thank you all again for being such a huge part of allowing us to serve where God has called us to in Athens, Greece.

«Δεόμεθα ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ, καταλλάγητε τῷ θεῷ.
τὸν μὴ γνόντα ἁμαρτίαν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἁμαρτίαν ἐποίησεν,
ἵνα ἡμεῖς γενώμεθα δικαιοσύνη θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ.»
- 2 Κορινθίους 5:21-22
"We implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us,
that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
- 2 Corinthians 5:21-22

Prayer Praises & Requests
  • The initial money needed for the college expansion has been accumulated thanks to several generous donors (including some of you, thank you!). This means the land can now be purchased as we continue to raise the money needed for the building to begin. Please keep this project in your prayers, as government deadlines still lie before us.
  • Praise the Lord for four new students who have joined us as this semester is getting under way. Please pray that all our students will have a fruitful season of learning and growing in the knowledge of God's Word!
  • On Saturday the 1st, not only did we celebrate Pavlos’ 30th birthday, but we also participated in a church planting seminar with several other key church leaders in Athens. It was exciting to note that two of the four speakers, who are also leading a church plant in downtown Athens, are recent GrBC alumni who are also currently teaching a church growth class to our 2nd & 3rd year Greek students. The event was very interesting and motivated us to seek how God is calling us to serve "our" city for His glory.
  • Finally, we thank and praise the Lord for the Bible study group we are a part of weekly. We're currently half way through the book of 2 Corinthians, and we're continually gleaning "new" truths from "ancient words." Please pray with us that we will not only passively “be in awe” as we’re learning these things, but also that we will live out with integrity the evidence that we are growing in the Lord through our study.
Why plant churches? "The vigorous, continual planting of new congregations is the single most crucial strategy for the numerical growth of the Body of Christ and the continual corporate renewal and revival of existing churches." ~ Tim Keller
Celebrating the beginning of a new year with our expanding Greek family. In 2014 we are excited to welcome a new sister-in-law through marriage, a new nephew through adoption, and our little one through a healthy birth. Please pray with us for these things.
